The Truth About Teak

Teak deserves its reputation. It's dense, oil-rich and remarkably resistant to rot and insects. It's been the resort standard for a century, and there are teak benches from the 1920s still on porches today.

But teak has drawbacks that get less attention. It takes 60 years for a teak tree to reach harvest maturity, and much of the world's premium teak comes from forests where sustainability practices are inconsistent at best. Even the best teak requires care: annual sanding, sealing or oiling to maintain its warm golden tone. Left untreated, teak fades to a silvery gray within a season.

For most buyers, none of that is a dealbreaker. But if you're investing in furniture meant to last for generations, the question worth asking is whether teak is still the best option available. We don't think so.

Robinia, also known as Black Locust, is a hardwood grown in the FSC-certified old-growth forests of Europe. Certified foresters have been harvesting it for hundreds of years, and the world's most rigorous outdoor furniture makers have built their reputations on it for decades.

Hardness. Robinia and teak sit at the same level on the Janka scale, the standard measure of hardwood density. What Robinia offers on top is greater dimensional stability, which means less warping and cracking over time.

Maturity. Robinia reaches harvest in about 30 years — half the time of teak. That's a real sustainability difference over a lifetime of buying furniture.

Weather resistance. Robinia's natural oil content and dense grain make it fully weatherproof without treatment. It requires no annual oiling, no sanding, no sealing. You leave it outside and it stays beautiful.

Sustainability. Unlike teak, Robinia isn't associated with tropical deforestation or endangered species. It's grown in managed European forests where every harvest is matched by replanting.

Finish flexibility. Teak's high oil content makes it difficult to paint or stain reliably. Robinia takes finishes beautifully, which is why we can offer our pieces in natural, black or white without compromise.

Longevity. With no treatment required, a well-made Robinia piece will outlast the person who bought it. We back ours with a five-year limited warranty, but the wood itself is built to last decades.

Care Without the Work

The single biggest daily-life benefit of Robinia over teak is that you don't have to do anything to keep it beautiful. No annual oiling. No sanding. No sealer. Leave it on the porch and it holds its color and integrity through every season.

If you prefer to preserve the original tone rather than let it weather to a natural silver-gray, an occasional wipe with a soft cloth and mild soap is enough. That's the whole care routine.
