An Evening at Watch Hill

Ocean House sits on a bluff above the Atlantic in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, a shingled, yellow grand hotel with a history that goes back to 1868. The original building was torn down in 2005 and rebuilt from the ground up to look almost exactly as it always had, right down to its silhouette against the sky. 

A hotel that rebuilt itself board by board to preserve its own history does not choose its furnishings lightly. Everything has to belong there and it has to hold up against salt air and ocean wind, season after season. A chair that looks right for a few months is easy to find. A chair that still looks right, and still rocks smoothly, ten summers from now, is a different thing entirely.

Ocean House chose our World's Finest rocker for its porches because each one is solid, weatherproof Robinia. Our chairs are built to withstand a coastal climate without chemical treatment and joined so they won't loosen or creak no matter the years. It was chosen because nothing else performed like it.

I think about the evenings that happen in those chairs. The sun goes down over the water, someone loses track of time, drinks keep flowing. That's the feeling we set out to build into every rocker we make, and the one you can bring home.
